Ospreys are fish-eating raptor birds in a class of their own. Whether you’re birding near the shores of Tripoli or on the banks of the Ohio river, there’s a good chance you’ll spot one.
A dive-crashing bird emerging from the sun-reflected waters of the Chesapeake Bay with a big fat flounder mortally pierced between its talons is a sight to behold.
So, where might you see these wondrous seahawks?
Ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) live on six continents, including North America. The species in the US are found throughout the country, but they aren’t permanent residents in most states. Ospreys breed in the north in the summers and spend their winters in the south.

What US States Do Ospreys Live In?
The osprey can be found near bodies of both fresh and saltwater where fish are plentiful, and with the exception of Antarctica, they populate every continent.
During migration season, you might get lucky and see one hovering over a cactus in the desert.
You may even spot the bird in your very own backyard.
If you don’t, and you’re interested in attracting them to your area, we have an article covering the subject. See our article on how to attract ospreys to your yard.
Ospreys winter mostly in South America, but some prefer a few southerly states like Florida and California.
In the spring, they migrate back and are found throughout most of North America.
However, there are some states where ospreys live throughout the year.
Where Do Ospreys Live Throughout the Year?
Ospreys live in these states throughout the year:
- Florida
- Georgia
- Louisiana
- California (north)
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
- Virginia (coast)
- Alabama (south)
- Texas (gulf)
Where Do Ospreys Breed During the Summer?
Ospreys breed in the north and near water bodies, including:
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Coasts
Here are the states in alphabetical order where ospreys nest in the spring and breed during the summer:
| Entire State or Most Regions | Some Parts of the State |
| Alaska | Alabama |
| Arkansas | California |
| Connecticut | Colorado |
| Delaware | Florida |
| Maine | Georgia |
| Maryland | Idaho |
| Massachusetts | Kentucky |
| Michigan | Louisiana |
| Minnesota | Montana |
| Mississippi | New York |
| New Hampshire | Ohio |
| New Jersey | Oregon |
| North Carolina | Pennsylvania |
| Rhode Island | South Carolina |
| Vermont | Tennessee |
| Virginia | Texas |
| Wisconsin | Utah |
| Washington | |
| West Virginia | |
| Wyoming |
Which States Do Ospreys Migrate Through In the Fall?
The American osprey, which is the subspecies Pandion haliaetus carolinensis, is migratory, so it doesn’t live in its breeding habitat throughout the year.
Here are the states ospreys migrate through in the fall:
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- California
- Colorado
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Kentucky
- Missouri
- Montana
- Nebraska
- Nevada
- New Mexico
- North Dakota
- Oklahoma
- Oregon
- South Dakota
- Texas
- Utah
- West Virginia
- Wyoming
Where Do North American Ospreys Live During the Winter?
All North American ospreys live in the tropics during winter, but many stop short of flying to Mexico and farther southward.
You will find ospreys in the following regions in the winter:
- Southern California
- Southwest Arizona
- Texas (east, central, and coastal)
This list excludes the gulf coast of Texas, where you’ll find ospreys throughout the year.
The list also excludes states like Florida and others with ospreys as perennial residents.
Do Ospreys Breed or Live in Canada?
Ospreys breed throughout Canada, except in Nunavut. The Canadian provinces and territories with extensive osprey breeding ranges are:
- Manitoba
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Northwest Territories
- Nova Scotia
- Ontario
- Prince Edward Island
- Quebec
- Yukon
Ospreys breed in most parts of Saskatchewan, but the southeast region is largely the raptor’s migratory flight path.
Likewise, ospreys breed in the northern halves of both Alberta and British Columbia but not in the southern regions, which they traverse during migration.
Therefore, ospreys only nest and breed in Canada during spring and summer.
All ospreys fly south in the fall and spend their winters thousands of miles away from Canada.
Do Ospreys Breed or Live in Mexico?
Ospreys live in Mexico during winters but don’t necessarily breed there. The migratory paths extend to the south through north and central Mexico.
These raptors live along the Gulf Coast and the Pacific while spending their winters in Mexico.
However, ospreys breed and live throughout the year in Baja California and Baja California Sur.
The peninsular coastlines along the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean are a perennial haven for ospreys.
Therefore, ospreys live in Mexico only during their migratory flights and temporary stays in the winter.
Except for Baja California and a few isolated places, all American ospreys fly north of Mexico at the advent of spring.
Osprey Habitat and Breeding FAQs
Do Ospreys Breed in Florida?
The American osprey (Pandion haliaetus carolinensis) is a native bird of Florida and is a nesting or breeding species in the state.
Apart from the permanent residents, Florida is home to many migrating ospreys during fall, winter, and spring.
While ospreys nest and breed in Florida, the range is not as widespread as in some northern states.
Here are the most common sites where you can spot ospreys in Florida:
- Coast
- Lakes
- Rivers
- Swamps
The Florida osprey’s favorite foods include the following:
- Catfish
- Crappie
- Mullet
- Shad
- Spotted trout
- Sunfish
If you are looking for ospreys in Florida during the breeding season, check out the following types of nesting sites:
- Trees with broken or hollow tops
- Large trees, whether dead or living
- Utility poles and high artificial sites
- Channel markers or duck blinds
Do Ospreys Breed in Texas?
Ospreys are found on the gulf coast of Texas throughout the year.
However, nearly half of Texas is home to these raptors only in the winter, and the rest of the state is the migratory path of the American osprey.
At a macro level, ospreys don’t breed in Texas.
There are occasional or rare instances of some ospreys nesting and breeding in the state.
But there’s no prevalent or changing trend of these birds choosing Texas as an extensive breeding range.
Do Ospreys Breed in Georgia?
Like Texas, ospreys breeding in Georgia isn’t a widespread phenomenon.
The raptor isn’t as thriving a species as it once was in many states due to the pesticide crisis when the likes of DDT nearly wiped out the ospreys from this country.
But the osprey population has been on a resurgent curve for some years now.
That trend has enthused many, leading to the popular Savannah osprey cam from Georgia that tracks these raptors’ nesting and breeding.
Do Ospreys Breed in California?
The population of ospreys in California declined due to human disturbance and pesticides.
But the raptor continues to be a yearlong resident in parts of northern California.
Ospreys also have a history of breeding in these regions, most notably in Shasta County.
Some of the reported osprey breeding sites in California include the following:
- Shasta Lake
- Eagle Lake
- Lake Almanor
- Reservoirs
- Other inland lakes
- Northwest rivers
The nests are almost always on large trees and cliffs that are close to lakes or rivers.
You’ll find ospreys in California throughout the year, especially along the coast.
