Hawks are notorious predators, hunting mice, birds, and even reptiles when they’re available. But how much do they eat in a day?
Hawks eat about 12-15% of their weight per day. However, how much hawks eat per day depends largely on the hawk’s weight and the availability of prey. Some hawks can eat as many as eight small birds in one day, while others can get by with just one medium-sized bird.

This Is How Much Hawks Eat Per Day
Hawks eat anywhere from 12% to 15% of their body weight each day. Their eating is influenced by the availability of prey and the nature of the habitat.
However, the biggest factor in how much a hawk eats is how much it weighs.
The largest hawk there is, the Ferruginous Hawk, can eat as much as 180 grams of meat each day.
But a smaller hawk such as the Cooper Hawk can go a day and a half without eating after getting just 90 grams of meat.
It’s important to note that hawks do not eat one consistent amount every day.
Unlike us, they might eat one large meal and be satisfied for a couple of days.
Or, they might need to hunt many times a day if they’re catching small prey like songbirds.
What Do Hawks Eat?
Hawks primarily eat small mammals like moles, squirrels, and mice, but they also eat rabbits, birds, bats, and fish.
They’ll even eat grasshoppers and other insects if that’s what’s available or animals as big as a raccoon.
When hawks live in cities, they’re more likely to eat small animals like birds. Common prey of the city hawk are:
- Cardinals
- Mourning doves
- Titmice
- Sparrows
- Pigeons
Hawks eat prey alive or dead, including all parts of the animal. They then regurgitate the indigestible parts.
They feed their young the same meat that they eat in smaller portions.
Insects make a great meal for a baby hawk.
Do Hawks Eat Pets?
Hawks do not usually eat pets, but there have been rare recorded cases of attacks on small dogs and cats.
Generally speaking, pets are too large and unwieldy for a hawk to carry off and eat, and a hawk prefers to stick to smaller prey.
Still, you can make sure your pets are safe by supervising them when they’re outdoors.
How Many Birds Do Hawks Eat per Day?
A hawk might eat anywhere from zero to eight birds in a day, but this depends on how big the hawk is, how big the prey is, and how recently the hawk has eaten.
Ferruginous Hawks can eat one adult rock pigeon and stay full for a couple of days.
However, that same hawk would need to eat eight sparrows just to get through one day.
Smaller hawks like the Cooper Hawk are more likely to make do with one bird per day, especially when they eat something larger like an adult quail.
Can a Hawk Starve to Death?
Hawks can and do starve to death, especially in their early days of life.
Roughly 70% to 80% of young raptors die before growing into adults, some due to starvation and others due to injury or disease.
Hawks take care of their young for the first seven weeks of life, during which time mortality in hawks is not as common.
It’s when the young hawks are left to earn their own territory and fend for themselves that so many don’t make it.
Some animal rescue centers will find and take in starving hawks.
However, you should never approach a hawk in the wild yourself unless you have direct instructions from a certified professional.
Even tired, injured, or hungry hawks have sharp beaks and talons that you need to be wary of.
However, when an adult hawk senses that there is too little prey in an area, it will likely take off for a better region rather than going without food.
How Often Do Hawks Need To Eat?
Hawks eat about every one to three days and sometimes hunt multiple times in a day if their prey is small.
A hawk’s hunting frequency varies greatly depending on what’s available and how big both predator and prey are.
Hawk eating frequency also varies depending on the time of year.
When it’s cold outside, a hawk needs extra energy to heat its body, which means that it will need more food.
Additionally, birds that eat well for a long period may build up fat stores that can carry them through long periods without food that follow.
What Time of Day Do Hawks Eat?
Hawks typically hunt at dusk and dawn but never at night.
They are diurnal birds, meaning that they are awake during daytime hours and sleep at night.
Because hawks hunt at dusk and dawn, they must have excellent eyesight to deal with low light conditions.
Their eyesight gives them an advantage over prey who do not have the same heightened senses at dusk and dawn.
They can move stealthily without being noticed and then swoop upon unsuspecting prey.
Hunting at dusk also gives hawks a wider selection of prey to choose from, as more animals are awake during this hour than during the middle of the day.
Natural Predators Of a Hawk
Hawks are known for being great predators, but they also can be prey. Natural predators of the hawk include the following:
- Owls
- Hawks
- Eagles
- Crows
- Ravens
- Raccoons
- Porcupines
- Snakes
Other predator animals like coyotes and foxes generally don’t eat hawks.
This is partly because they’re picky eaters but partly because hawks have sharp beaks and talons and the ability to fly away.
These predators are more likely to choose easy prey like pigeons and songbirds.
Sometimes, hawks and snakes have battles to determine who is prey and who is the predator.
A hawk might descend on a snake hoping for a meal and then find that the snake wants to eat the hawk instead.
Young hawks are especially at risk of being eaten.
